Remember when Chaim Witz was cool? Wait, let me rephrase that-remember when Chaim Witz was the coolest mofo on the planet? He, replete with demonic hegemony, the appointed leader of the Kiss army. That dirty mouth, double entendre intended, that spewed both bloody caplets and fire and yet was still outdone by its elongated tongue. The demon face boots, insidious and stylish all at once. And if all that were not enough he morphed into a marketing guru who singlehandedly changed the union of musician and businessman. If ever someone encapsulated what it meant to be a rock star it was him, Mr. Witz, from the motherland of Israel to the ignoble streets of NYC. Elementary school teacher turned makeup wearing demon rocker.
Individually, they’ve kept the city of New York safe from its biggest threats. Together, they’re a force to be reckoned with – and the world agrees! Organizers behind Chicago’s Riot Fest (September 15-17 at Douglas Park) unveiled the daily lineups for this year’s festival. Ritualistic, apocalyptic noisemakers ATRIARCH are back with their fourth offering of mind-altering, doom-soaked, deathrock entitled Dead As Truth. Recorded and mixed by Greg Wilkinson at Earhammer Studios (Om, Graves At Sea, Vhol) and featuring artwork by Stevie Floyd (YOB, Dark Castle), Dead As Truth sees ATRIARCH venture deeper into the blackened abyss with haunting incantations, exotic drones, and crushing aural experimentations that boldly embrace death’s cold heart. Fragments of post-punk, gothic doom, black metal, sludge, and noise complement the band’s desolate universe and further supplement their most immediate and formidable release to date. ATRIARCH prescribe the order that there is but one truth...
When I was in 9th grade, I missed the chance to see Mastodon perform Crack the Skye in its entirety. Such an album has made a massive impact on me growing up, it was a disappointment that I couldn’t go see them perform. A few years later and I missed another chance to see a full album performed in its entirety: Amon Amarth’s Surtur Rising. Part of their “Evening With” tour before they blew up to great heights on the following album, I ended up willingly passing on this performance. While I enjoy the album they were advertising, it never made any sense to me: why were they playing this album in particular live?
Los Angeles Thrash Metal legends BODY COUNT have released yet another music video in the wake of their widely acclaimed new album, Bloodlust. The band’s music video for the song “Here I Go Again” is arguably their most gory and horrific offering to date, all the while showcasing frontman Ice-T’s well known fascination with the morbid side of art and playing the villain. Only befitting for such a video, the band has partnered with some of the biggest authorities on horror-focused entertainment, namely Bloody-Disgusting, Dread Central, and Blumhouse, to release the new video.
I remember the exact moment when I learned Angela Gossow was leaving Arch Enemy, and then the next day I was overly satisfied with Alissa White-Gluz’s performance on “War Eternal.” The album went on to be a big one for the band, with Alissa being a natural fit for the band. Three years on, it’s time for a new album.
I can’t say I’m excited for what Sony has in plan for their Spider-Man properties. The upcoming film starring Venom, planned to be an R-rated movie, may star Tom Hardy, but I’m not sold. To add fire to the flame, Silver & Black is still coming and with it starring a Silver Sable and Black Cat. It remains to be seen how this is going to connect to the MCU, seeing as Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal are both contradicting one another, but Sony are now moving forward with announcing plans for more movies.
