The Force Awakens, Rogue One, and the forthcoming The Last Jedi have all broken tradition for the Star Wars franchise, in which all live-action films had previously been released in May of their releases. However, based on the returns of the former two films, December has worked extremely well for the juggernaut of a franchise, with Star Wars moving beyond its traditional Memorial Day release period. Lucasfilm seems to be doing a course correction in teh coming months.

It was revealed on StarWars.com yesterday that the release for the untitled ninth installment of the main saga and the final film in the sequel trilogy will be released in May of 2019. Also revealed was that the fifth Indiana Jones film has been relocated to July of 2020. The post reads as follows:

The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm announced today two major upcoming release dates.

Star Wars: Episode IX is now set for release on May 24, 2019. Directed by Colin Trevorrow, the film will close out the third Star Wars trilogy.

In addition, the fifth chapter of the Indiana Jones series is now confirmed for a July 10, 2020 release. Both Steven Spielberg, director of every Indiana Jones film, and star Harrison Ford will return.

It is worth noting that the still untitled Han Solo anthology film is also scheduled to release in May of 2018. The film, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and starring Alden Ehrenreich and Woody Harrelson, will be released a brief five months following The Last Jedi. The eighth main Star Wars movie was originally scheduled to release next month, however following the release of The Force Awakens it was moved back to a December release.

It was originally announced that the fifth film involving Indiana Jones would release in 2019, but it seems Dr. Jones will become a priority for Lucasfilm once the sequel Star Wars trilogy is completed. Very little is known about the film, but it is known that it will take place after Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in continuity.
