cadabra-recordsLiterary fans rejoice! Through Cadabra Records, read by Andrew Leman and creepy soundscapes provided by Theologian, the delightfully dark Pickman’s Model by H. P. Lovecraft comes to frightening life!

Cadabra Records is a fairly new label specializing in spoken word projects. The subject of today’s review is their 2nd of their Lovecraft projects, Pickman’s Model. And this does contain spoiler alerts, so prepare yourselves for the shock of such shocks. Or not.

The album is the story split into 2 tracks, Sides A and B, and is completely spoken word, which means a narrator (Andrew Leman) and some extremely well done sound work (Theologian), including both subtle music pieces and sound effects when necessary. Beautifully crisp production means every syllable is captured in splendiferous clarity, and Mr. Leman nails the creepiness needed for HPL work to come off well. Stressing and stressed reading as the story progresses lends a life to the voice of the narrative, as the one “speaking” in the story, an unnamed individual who tells his, quite literally, ghoulish tale of the titular Pickman. He sends a sharp chill up the spine as his voice warps into something that has seemingly witnessed the events printed decades ago; as if he indeed has such horrors visited upon him, instead of simply being words added to a page. Coupled with sounds and musics that absolutely swim in the darkness of the soul, as Theologian is most well known for, the story simply bewitches and brings a sinister air to the listener.

At a half hour’s runtime, the story is perfect for a quick scare or simply a great literary adventure for someone who has a quick break, or ANY H. P. Lovecraft fan who wants to hear justice done to the author’s horrific prose.
