GodzillaRecently after announcing that the yet untitled sequel to 2014’s Godzilla was being pushed back to 2019,Legendary announced that Gareth Edwards, the director of the first film, would not be returning for the sequel.

Announced shortly after the first film’s financial success, the sequel to Godzilla was scheduled for 2018 and would have allowed Edwards to work on another film before that, which has ended up becoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The director expressed admiration for the kaiju genre with his genre mash-up, Monsters, which had earned him the position for Godzilla.

According to the report, this is old news and only being made public currently, as Edwards wishes to step back from Hollywood to focus on smaller films. Understandably, a film with Godzilla present is not what one would imagine to be “smaller.”

The upcoming film will be the third in Legendary and Warner Bros. new kaiju series of films, of which builds up to Godzilla vs. King Kong in 2020. Kong: Skull Island is scheduled for a March 10, 2017 release, will help pave the path for the kaiju rematch, almost sixty years later. Legendary will also be expanding the kaiju roster in the Godzilla sequel by reportedly featuring King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan. Should this cinematic universe approach work out, it’s very likely we could be seeing Rodan and Mothra is future solo films, but Legendary has not released any additional info aside from the three films currently planned.

Legendary has not announced a replacement director for the sequel, however writer Max Bornstein has finished a first treatment for the script. Claiming he hears the fans loud and clear, he promises to give everyone exactly what they’re asking for with the sequel.
