KoronalEveryone keeps saying that djent bands are the ones taking direct influence from Meshuggah, and that the band in question was no doubt ahead of their time. The latter is true, without a doubt, but bands like Periphery, TesseracT, and Vildhjarta only show so much of an influence before venturing into more progressive directions, as opposed to the mathematics and brutality Meshuggah offers. It’s not an insult, but the truth, as every band ultimately has become something unique instead of cloning their idols.

Poland’s Koronal are doing what the djent bands are doing, yet albeit in a much different fashion and displaying their Meshuggah influence proudly. The exception is, however, that they look towards technical and progressive death metal for that extra kick. Technically resembling Meshuggah but combining the heaviness and dissonance of Poland-natives Decapitated, Koronal are standing upon a unique combination that makes sense in every way possible. Their debut album, Flicker Away, released this past March, and is a brilliant example of what talented musicians can do with the right influences.

Lead single “Usurper” (The video is attached under the text) is infectious from its dissonant intro to the grooves that carry the entire song, while tracks like “Ringshine” allow the guitars to solo more frequently and the instrumental side of the band shine. Koronal make it clear from their first listen, let alone the opening track “Scarred Protector,” that they understand how groove works, and it’s enough to make even the most accomplished musicians jealous. Across seven tracks, Koronal prove that they know what their sound entails, and it’ll quickly make them one of your new favorite bands, too.

Flicker Away is available on the band’s Bandcamp page for immediate purchase. Keep your eyes locked on Koronal, as they are no doubt going to be onto bigger things eventually.
