2016 has been pretty steady so far, but it is without a doubt filled to the brim with hyped releases. Such is the spot Brooklyn’s Tombs have fallen into: 2011’s Path of Totality netted them Decibel Magazine’s Album of the Year award, and 2014’s Savage Gold continued their trend of greatness.
All Empires Fall is the band’s first EP release since their split with Planks back in 2008, and the first to feature new members after a shift in their line-up. Upgrading from a four piece, new guitarist and drummer Evan Void and Charlie Schmid join founding member Mike Hill and bassist Ben Brand, the band has also brought Fade Kainer into their ranks to work synthesizers into their sound. The band have constantly been upgrading their line-up size since the release of The Path of Totaltiy
The new EP has all of Tombs’ signature elements present, as well as their top-notch songwriting abilities. A steady blend of post-metal, doom, sludge, and black metal create this behemoth of a beast, and that’s as present as ever with All Empires Fall. The dark atmospheres coupled with crushing passages only help solidify the band’s position in the underground of extreme metal today. You can stream the EP before it’s April 1st release this Friday on the Relapse Records Soundcloud page.
