Hunter Young Hard Music, News, Reviews

RABBITS is a long running, sludgy/heavy/drinking/punk/hardcore/noise metal band out of Washington state, who really tend to never follow a single damn convention in the musical world. These guys like to play it heavy, and play it loud, and they don’t give a F*CK! who cares about it.

The “album”, S.O.S., is some unreleased material coupled with several covers, of which almost all are fairly unknown to the author (Me! Surprise!), but nevertheless, this music is exactly what I love to hear. They take songs, touch them inappropriately with their grubby little hands, and then hand you back something that resembles noise that happens to be musically inclined. They say there is no bass, which I think is correct, the guitar is super distorted and serves nicely as a bass stand-in, and the drums are nice and simple and garage doom. Overall, it sounds like a great band to just go, drink, watch, and hit on the single hot chick at the show.

And a warning: looking for production, expect disappointment. This record is a powerhouse that could never be something so normal as “cleaned up”. This album’s sound takes your mom home with a box of wine (on sale), closes the door, and then proceeds to do things your friends wouldn’t even want to think about to her. Its a rough sound, is what I am saying, but its perfect. The chords ring out like you dropped acid on the strings, full and down-tuned, twining both bass and guitar into one cacophonous sound, with a great back-beat from the drums that sound like the are in teh closet down the hall. The first track, Wooze, is a prime example of this, and is my favorite cut so far. It also showcases how damn catchy they can be. You’ll find your mind wandering back to the opening bars and wanting to crack open a frosty beverage when you do.

The album, without preamble, is a brick to the ear, but with a nice SORRY pencil’d on it. Some may like this, most may say it’s just noise, but its a fun record to just put on and let play in the background. Just keep the box wine away from your mom, at the same time.
