» Blog Archive New Album Review: ABISSO by OvO -
Hunter Young Hard Music, News, Reviews

So I have a confession to make: I have no idea what the hell OvO is about. But I also say the same thing about Kardashians. To be honest, I can see where the art comes into play with noise metal, and I can appreciate everything that goes into making such a cacophony, but It’s completely not my thing, generally speaking. And with this album, ABISSO, “generally” can be applied to much of what I hear.

The styles contained on this one album boggle the mind from the word GO!, and they never really cease. Case in point: on track #2, Tokoloshi (I am pretty sure this is a reference to a waster sprite, from Google and the video, linked at bottom), it starts with a heavily fuzzed out, erratic signal cut from the guitar, fading into a slightly less erratic, monolithic strum. That is all layered over some pretty classical sounding jazz style drumming (I think, but its a pretty small setup from just the sound) and vocals that are reminiscent of some of the more well shot documentaries of the Amazon. They are high, ululating cries that just run cold fingers down the spine.

The rest of the album seems to just throw differing styles with each other to see what sticks, as with Dream Within a Dream (#4), a caustic, mind-numbing song with barely interpretable lyrics growled and shrieked by both Stefania Pedretti and Bruno Dorella , some repetitive drumming (good stuff though) that flows very well with everything else on top of it, and a hellacious soundscape in the background which all combines to create something Tarantino might find a bit off.

The album continues on in this fashion of wending its way through off beat and surprising turns, and does leave the listener feeling emotionally confused. It’s a deep album, I think?, and certainly sound very artistic and heavy in an atmospheric sense. I would say very Natural Born Killers, if turned into something so limited as an aural medium.

Like I said before, not my usual stuff, but I will be giving it a few more listens in the future. Look for the album to be out this month!
