After many years of broken dreams and wishful thinking it is entirely possible that the hope for a new Spawn film may be coming soon. Todd McFarlane has made a few statements lately that have led us to this belief, and goddamn are we excited. “The thing that keeps slowing it down is that the negotiation I’ve done is I write, produce, direct, but I’ve got to push a lot of my other endeavors off to the side so I can just get tunnel vision on it,” McFarlane told The Gate website during the Fan Expo Canada this weekend. “Everybody at my company is now going, ‘We’ve got to find Todd the time to finish all this.'” McFarlane is quick to brush aside visions of a unnecessary blockbuster.”I think it’s a quick shoot,” he explained. “It’s not going to be a giant budget with a lot of special effects; it’s going to be more of a horror movie and a thriller movie, not a superhero one. I’ve got so many people phoning now that I’ve got to get it done. I’ve made some promises to people this year.” It’s great to hear that the creator of this series is not looking to sell out and make his masterpiece a sell out blockbuster which would lose sight of his original story. However, fans have been given the run around about a spawn reboot before. What’s different this time? . “(The producers) want me to deliver the script by the end of the year, which would basically mean we’d be shooting next year. So, that’s the goal right now.” If this is the case this time line would place the opening of Spawn next to the opening of Avenger 2 and the Man of Steel sequel. Perhaps by that time the world will be ready for a dark adult superhero with a (crosses fingers) R rating? If there is any chance of this film not having an R rating, they should probably just botch the idea and move on to the next.
