Joss Whedon is standing for his Iron Man. Robert Downy Junior is in the middle of negotiations with his contract for Marvel’s The Avengers 2 and Marvel’s The Avengers 3, but it’s not clear whether he’ll return or if Marvel will recast Tony Stark. Please say it isn’t so. I couldn’t see Tony Stark as anyone else at this point. Whedon told The Daily Beast, “He is Iron Man. He is Iron Man in the way that Sean Connery was James Bond. I have no intention of making Avengers 2 without him, nor do I think I’ll be called upon to do that. I don’t think it’s in my interest, Marvel’s interest, or his interest, and I think everything will be fine.” “But I know that this is Hollywood and you roll with things,” Whedon continued. “You have to be ready for the unexpected. But I loved working with Robert, and everybody knows he embodied that role in a way no one else can. The day he was cast, I went up to [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige and said, ‘You brilliant son of a bitch.’” There is a lot of drama surrounding this issue. Scarlett Johanson and Chris Hemmsworth are in speaks of dipping out as well. The Hulk alone has been recasted 3 times, and it’s a personal pet peeve of mine when a character you know has been recast. It wouldn’t be the end of the world considering how many different characters are featured within the comics that could be used. Miss Marvel could be used. Marvel could have Andrew Garfield, Spiderman, make an appearance at one point. I don’t know if Marvel is being greedy or if the stars are. This is a topic I’m very interested in following over the next couple weeks.
