In 2009 writers David Elliot and Paul Lovett wrote G.I Joe: Rise of the Cobra. This year Paramount, MGM, and Hasbro released G.I Joe: Retaliation. There is now a major copyright case going ensuing due to accusation that the new release had stolen ideas from the previous writers. However, there is much more than plastic figurines on this line of fire, $23 million in damages are being requested.
Post to the release of the first film the writers were asked to give “plotlines, themes, characters and more for a potential sequel.” They are claiming that said ideas were used to within the sequel with out consent or label of involvement.
“Even the most cursory review of the Joe Retaliation Movie and the Plaintiffs’ Work reveals that they are substantially similar in every material way,” the lawsuit says.
The suit goes on to say that almost every aspect of the G.I Joe: Retaliation film is riddled with similarity and plagiarism.
The lawsuit is seeking a minimum of $20 million in damages and $3 million in compensation charges. Paramount Studios is declining a statement as of now.
I say everyone solves this the good old fashion way. Buy a couple figurines and battle it out to the death. Who’s with me?
