For almost 30 years the Deftones have been producing music that has rocked the metal world and won them notoriety amongst fans. Their live performance is something many fans wait all year round to see. They have traveled with every big name in heavy rock and metal only to put on some of the greatest raw live performances that listeners have ever witnessed. This weekend in New York City paid testament to these statements when they hit the stage at Terminal5.

Periphery

The opening band was a band named Periphery. Although new to the scene, these boys put on a killer performance. Hailing from Washington D.C and surrounding areas they had a fantastic progressive sound that left a resounding cheer of approval in my ears. Full of energy and no fear of polyrhythmic patterns, it was clear immediately why this band was chosen to tour with the Deftones. The band was formed in 2005 by guitarist Misha Mansoor, and after a great performance of the lineup shuffle the final band consists of vocalist Spencer Sotelo, drummer Matt Halpern, additional guitarists Jake Bowen and Mark Holcomb, and bassist Adam “Nolly” Getgood. In 2010 the band released their first self titled album, and on July 2012 they released their second album Periphery II: This Time It’s Personal.
If you have not heard of them, do yourself the favor and open up your iTunes and download Icarus Lives… right now. No seriously. Drop what you’re doing. They have toured with some names you may know as well. Since 2008 they have travelled supporting artists including DevilDriver, Emmure, Veil of Maya, Animals as Leaders, God Forbid, The Dillinger Escape Plan, A Life Once Lost, This Time Its War, Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza, Fear Factory, Darkest Hour, Fair To Midland, The Human Abstract, Textures, The Contortionist and Stray From The Path.
After a short recess that included a romp around the venue and a cigarette and an adult beverage purchase of the rooftop bar of Terminal5, I set myself up for the main event. It was clear who this entire venue was present for the second the band took the stage. An extremely sold out venue, packed wall to wall, rumbled as the members dispersed themselves about their musical weapons. Hailing from Sacramento, CA grammy award winning band, Deftones, had arrived. Since 2000 when their album White Pony topped Billboard charts they have been widely recognized as the beautiful balance between metal and experimental rock, making them one of the most unique bands to ever hit the music scene, and does it show! Abe Cunningham, Chino Moreno and Stephen Carpenter have been playing together since high school in the ’80s. Having truly found their sound in an era where greats like Rage Against the Machine and Tool thrived, it should come as no surprise that this band took to album producing like fish in water. Having taken in many hardships including Bassist Cheng sustaining injures from a horrific car accident in 2008, the band has overcome and is still producing music and touring. There music has been used in many films and they have toured with some of the absolute greats including Anthrax, Stormtroopers of Death, Metallica, and Korn.
Needless to say, they rocked this venue. After their last performance was cancelled due to hurricane Sandy, fans can say that the show was well worth the rescheduled wait. Their performance was intimate, arousing, hard and passionate. Everything that every single inhabitant of this New York building had paid and hoped for. They continue touring through the US through the next couple months. If they’re coming close to you, they are an absolute must see.
