Clay’s Park brought the rock to Ohio this past weekend with its’ second annual Rock the Resort festival. Campers spent their days enjoying the sun in the resort’s water park followed by a night of music.
Cavo kicked off the festival on Friday, currently on tour in support of their new album, Thick as Thieves. The park filled up throughout their set, which consisted of a combination of their own material as well as covers. They pulled off a unique, rocked up version of Duran Duran’s Come Undone well, bringing back nostalgic memories of the 80’s. Their set closed with Champagne off of their debut album, during which hundreds of fans shouted along with the chorus, “could’ve been the champagne, could’ve been the cocaine”.
Cavo met with a line of fans while the stage was set up for the next act–Papa Roach. The band came out ready to rock following two canceled shows due to doctors orders. No one knew what to expect from the recently sick frontman, but I think we were all pleasantly surprised. Jacoby’s vocals were flawless and he flew across the stage, getting everyone jumping and going crazy.
Their set included numerous tracks from Infest to please ‘old school P Roach fans’ as well as a number from each of their follow up albums. Mid-way through the set they played their upcoming single Still Swingin’, to be released on July 24. This new single is a throwback to the rap-rock roots of the band and features heavy riffs and a catchy chorus. If this track is any indication of what we can expect from the new album in October, these guys are going to have a big year.
After some time to rest tired feet and grab some water, Seether came on to close out day one of the festival. They opened with Gasoline and Fur Cue to get everyone going. Singer Shaun Morgan was quiet in between songs, transitioning into each new track with random guitar and drum solos. Their set consisted of quite a few songs from their newest album Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray, as well as an incredible acoustic performance of Broken.
This festival was impressive in that it booked strong bands, and gave each band time to show what they’ve got. It was a refreshing change from 20 minute festival sets that leave everyone wanting more.
