Wayne Static, formerly of Static X, came to New York City last night in support of “Pighammer”, his debut solo record. On stage first were two local bands screaming through what sounded like one very long song. Up next was Baltimore’s Polka Dot Cadaver.

Prior to the show I had never heard of these guys. Their unusual name had me assuming they would be similar to the other openers. They proved me wrong by powering through a solid set, including a cover of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean”, dance moves included. The bassist kept the crowd going throughout the set by jumping into the crowd and head banging with them.

Loyal fans filed into Gramercy Theater on a Monday night while the stage was set up for the Static X front man. He opened with two tracks from “Pighammer.” Before getting into Static X songs, two scantily clad girls came out on stage to bring the guys shots, joining them for the rest of the set to dance. Within one song the girls had their tops off, which the audience seemed to approve of. While the girls danced they played the Static X songs fans had come out for.

Although fans enjoyed Wayne’s solo work, the consensus seemed to be that everyone came out to hear Static X. During Static X songs it was hard to believe the original lineup wasn’t there, especially with Wayne’s ridiculous hair distracting from the other band members.

Despite a slow start to the night it proved to be worth the trip. Polka Dot Cadaver will be a band to look out for in the near future, and Wayne Static will likely have a very successful solo career.
