The Big Kahuna Comic Book News, News

So, another week passes and another batch of DC Comics hits the retail market. So what does the new DC 52 mean to the comic book industry and to a larger extent the pop culture world? DC Comics release of their recent and upcoming #1’s has taken the comic book world by storm. Is this good for comic books and is it good for DC Comics? I will say yes to both…cautiously. It’s great to finally see DC on top of their game and the constant buzz word for comics lately. The constant media coverage by major media outlets (CNN, USA Today, NY Times) has got to have the suites at Warner Bros. very happy. Also word is that DC Comics will claim the top spot in market share from Marvel Comics for the fist time in a long time when sales reports are released later this month. That’s all well and good, for the short term. There are some foreseeable problems that can creep up. First off, one of DC’s major re launches, Justice League features DC’s two top creators and executives, Jim Lee and Geoff Johns (Co Publisher and Creative Officer, respectively). Johns is writing several of DC high profile books and taking on media endeavors. Lee, although one of comic books most prolific and most popular artists is know for chronic lateness with projects (Batman and Robin The Boy Wonder anyone?). This can spell major trouble for a delicate re launch. Also, many long term collectors might have a problem with this kind of re boot as it might seem that time invested in recent major storylines these past years would seem wasted. (Infinite Crisis, Final Crisis) Now, it has been stated by several DC staff that some events, such as Blackest Night and Crisis On Infinite Earths did in fact happen. Don’t know how they will explain some of these, as it seems many of the heroes don’t currently know each other. I’m sure those current over sites can be corrected with time. Another possible snafu can be major events. How will DC now handle major event books with a brand new universe in hand? Will they let these new books and creators get a handle on their storylines before a major event is announced? Well, time will tell. Hopefully DC can keep this momentum going.
