Long time comic book lothario and Brooklyn mainstay Joe Koch recently sat down to talk about all things comic books and the relationship comic books has with Brooklyn, NY.
One of New York’s hidden treasures has recently been opening it’s doors to the general public. The Joe Koch Comic Book Warehouse is one of the city’s best kept secrets. Hidden away in the outskirts of Brooklyn, The Joe Koch Comic Book Warehouse has been servicing the needs of comic book enthusiasts for over 25 years. The Warehouse was never opened to the public until the past couple of years when Mr. Koch decided to let collectors and dealers in on a per appointment basis and then with a monthly sale to the public on the first weekend of every month. Mr. Koch has seen the comic book industry through it’s heyday of the 70’s and the first conventions being created in the city (small churches and hotel ballrooms) to the tumultuous 90’s where comic books were selling in the millions! Many a creator has also passed through the storied halls of the warehouse for special visits (Arthur Sydam, Gene Colan) Mr. Koch’s warehouse is one of the largest working comic book warehouse’s on the east coast. Stepping into this place you get a sense of the ages that this place has been here. You can practically find any kind of comic book from almost any era. Tons of out of print monster magazines (Eerie and Monsters) fill up the numerous shelves in one section of the warehouse.
