The Big Kahuna Comic Book News, Movies, News

For those of you that have not been watching the line of DC Animated DVDs from Warner Home Video that have been coming out for the past several years, shame on you, you don’t know what you’re missing. For those of you that have every copy of every release, YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS ONE!!!! Superman/Batman : Apocalypse follows on the footsteps of Superman/Batman: Public Enemies based on the famed comic book series of the same name. Let’s start off with the fact that the animation keeps getting better with each release. The great thing that was done with this particular DVD is the way the animators mimicked the art of the late Michael Turner, now I was never a fan of Mr. Turners art, he just makes every male character look very metro sexual, but I must say that his style does translate well on screen, especially with the women, which he was famous for drawing, look hot and awesome on screen (did I just say hot about animated women?)

For those who haven’t read the comic, the story involves the arrival of Supergirl to Earth, as she crash lands in Gotham, her first hero encounter is none other than The Dark Knight, as she trips and fumbles her way through town on her own powers, Superman arrives and calms her down in her Kryptonian language. The story then evolves to include Wonder Woman and the Amazons, who show up to take Kara, who they deem dangerous because of her youth and her immense powers, to train on Paradise Island. Enter Darkseid, who has had Granny Goodness searching for a replacement leader for his Furies, since the departure of Big Barda. Won’t give away anymore, but rest assured that the battle scenes are serious eye candy.
Again, can’t stress the character development and visual animation enough, everyone from The New Gods to the Amazons look great. DC’s animation division has definitely outdone itself with this release. Ed Asner returns as Granny Goodness (Justice League Unlimited) and Andre Braugher as Darkseid are great voice additions and captures the characters essence to a tee.

Usual suspects Tim Daly (Superman), Susan Eisenberg (Wonder Woman) and Kevin Conroy (Batman) round out the cast of the big three. Extras include a Green Arrow short which is thoroughly enjoyable. A first look at the next installment of the DC Universe movie All Star Superman – Behind the Story – “The Fourth World: The New Gods” digs into the origin of Darkseid; “New Gods: Mr. Miracle Pod” hones in on High Father’s biological son, Mister Miracle; “New Gods: Orion Pod” dissects the “New Gods” stories further, turning its attention to Orion, Darkseid’s biological son; and “Supergirl: The Last Daughter of Krypton” delves into the history of Supergirl. Bonus episodes hand picked by Bruce Timm: Superman The Animated Series -”Little Girl Lost Parts 1 and 2,” “Apokolips Now! Parts 1 and 2″ [NOTE: Only the Blu-ray has all 4 episodes – the DVD only offers 2.]

I wish the W.B. film division would take a page from the animated division on how to make superhero movies, as these guys and gals have there “you know what” together. Pick this one up!!!!!
