The Big Kahuna Hard Music, News

Gruntruck was one of the bands who defined the early Seattle grunge scene. The group recorded two spectacular albums – “Inside Yours” and “Push” –  but afterwards faded into obscurity, overshadowed by the bigger and more successful grunge acts. This exclusive double reissue brings back both classic CDs in one package – an ultimate taste of the Sound of Seattle…

The band initially released their debut album “Inside Yours” through a local Seattle label eMpTy Records in 1990, and then returned a year later with a 2-track split album with Motorhoney, released through Musical Tragedies. This was enough to catch the attention of Roadrunner Records, who offered the group a multi-album contract. This way “Inside Yours” got re-released on January 14th, 1991, with two additional bonus tracks. The album, produced by the legendary Jack Endino received a very warm reception on the local scene. Reviewers went on to compare Gruntruck’s music to the early works of Soundgarden and Alice In Chains, pointing out the remarkable ability to join metal heaviness with post-punk and arena rock, spicing it up with a bit of 70’s funk. Such songs as “Paint” and “So Long” became instant hits and the group managed to gather an impressive following. The band released their second album – “Push” – on February 2nd, 1992. The sophomore offering brought an even heavier material, with such brilliant tracks as “Tribe”, “Gotta Believe” and “Crazy Love” (to which a video was made). Jack Endino once again proved his extraordinary skills, delivering excellent production.

Gruntruck are to this day considered by the underground scene as heroes of the grunge movement, worthy of being placed in the same row with Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. Both of their full-length albums are proof that this music couldn’t have emerged anywhere else than Seattle. Gruntruck’s albums are re-released now in a double digipak edition limited to 2000 copies. “Inside Yours” includes two bonus tracks. Digitally remastered using 24-Bit process, released on a golden disc. The release date is scheduled for 2nd August in Europe and 5th October in USA (via MVD).

Bio
Gruntruck’s beginnings reach all the way back to 1989 when Ben McMillan, vocalist/guitarist known from the band Skin Yard, decided to form a side project of his own. After the release of Skin Yard’s second album, “Hallowed Ground”, their drummer “Norman” Scott McCullum decided to leave the group. McMillan contacted him soon after that and along with guitarist Tom Niemayer (The Accüsed) and bassist Tim Paul (Napalm Beach) formed Gruntruck – a brand new voice involved in the widely spreading grunge movement. The album, produced by the legendary Jack Endino (who apart from producing some of the most prominent grunge records in the history of the genre was also the founder of Skin Yard), received a very warm reception on the local scene.
Gruntruck released their second album – “Push” – on February 2nd, 1992. The sophomore offering brought an even heavier material, with such brilliant tracks as “Tribe”, “Gotta Believe” and “Crazy Love” (to which a video was made). Jack Endino once again proved his extraordinary skills, delivering excellent production. In Fall Gruntruck went on to tour alongside Alice In Chains across USA and Canada. They visited Europe in the following year, joining Pantera on their winter tour. In 1994 they once again went on tour with Alice In Chains (this time accompanied by Screaming Trees) who were at that time promoting the album “Dirt”. These unfortunately were the last stellar moments in the band’s career. In 1996 Gruntruck ended up in a legal battle with Roadrunner after the label terminated their contract. The group eventually won but the tension proved too strong for bassist Tim Paul to handle. He left the band shortly after the verdict and was soon replaced by Alex Sibbald (ex-The Accüsed). After a moderately successful tour with Circus of Power, Scott McCullum also decided to quit Gruntruck. The band managed to find a replacement drummer – Josh Sinder – and resurface with a 3-track EP called “Shot”. This was by far Gruntruck’s last released material. In the late 90’s the band returned with the original line-up for a couple of local shows. In 2000 they played a string of successful concerts in the Northwest area, all of which met with a very enthusiastic reaction from the fans. Unfortunately, in 2002 the group decided to disband permanently, leaving behind a legacy of truly unforgettable music. Any chances for a future reunion faded away after Ben McMillan’s death in January 2008…

Both of their full-length albums are proof that this music couldn’t have emerged anywhere else than Seattle. This is the true soundtrack to the grunge revolution…
