Deuce Hard Music, News

The Sacto, CA rockers release their 6th studio album and maintain their beautifully violent style. After a near break-up during the recording of “Saturday Night Wrist” and with bassist Chi Cheng in a coma after a devastating 2008 car accident and the subsequent scrapping of the album “Eros” there have been doubts to what the Deftones were going to be able to come up with for their new album. Long time fans will not be disappointed as the band maintains their early aggression and couples it with their more melodic moments found in their more recent work.
I’ll be straightforward, the aggression doesn’t match that of classics like “7 Words” or “Rickets” but definitely packs a punch and is more noticeable on tracks “Royal,” “Cmnd/Ctrl,” and the early single, “Rocket Skates.” The album opener and title track is fierce but has more in common with the tracks on “Deftones.”
There’s some groovier moments on the album as well featured in “Prince” and “You’ve Seen The Butcher.” These tracks feature a great mix between the aggression and melody, showcasing the diversity of the bands talents and Chino’s vocal range. They’re not quite “White Pony” material but show the evolution of the band from that point.
“Sextape” and “976-Evil” are the prominent softer tracks on “Diamond Eyes” but don’t feel like filler or out of place in the realm of a modern Deftones album. Chino’s ability to croon lyrics is still uncanny to any of their contemporaries.
The closer, “This Place Is Death,” bears resemblance at moments to “Pink Maggit” from “White Pony.” It works well as a closer and leaves you satisfied at the end.
“Diamond Eyes” is Deftones pure and simple. The album is relatively no frills and stands up well alongside their previous efforts. I’m looking forward to hearing the new material live, hopefully in a club/ ballroom tour prior to BLACKDIAMONDSKYE. Long time fans should absolutely pick it up and the album can sure rope some newcomers into the Deftones camp.
