May 5 2010 Comic Book Review

This week I went out to my local comic book shop – Blue Beetle Comics here in Barrie, Ontario – and I asked them to recommend me some comics that I normally don’t get.  I have been hooked on Green Lantern series of books from the “flagship” title to Corps, and Blackest night (now Brightest day).

So in addition to Brightest Day #1 I picked up Kill Shakespeare #1, I’ll give you all a brief review of both of them all here in this article.

I don’t know about you, but I thought Blackest Night was AMAZING, though there seemed to leave more questions than answers –which I hope will be addressed by the time Brightest Day is done.

The artwork in BD#1 was great; Reis, Gleason, Syaf, Clark and Prado did a great job.  This book seemed like more of a prologue than a starting chapter, and it has a 52 or Countdown feel to it, I count five different stories being started.

The only concern I have is the villain they seem to be highlighting in the story – Black Manta.  Yes you read right – BLACK MANTA – the great clam headed villain is back, a wee bit more violent (when you read when he does to the kitchen staff where he’s working you will understand) but he still looks like a clam from Chernobyl.

I am very interested in seeing where the newly resurrected Deadman is going in the story.  Let’s hope this series is as great as Blackest Night.

This is a great new twelve issue series from IDW.  When I asked Pete from my comic store what the hype was about it, he grabbed his copy from the back room and told me I had to read it.  I am glad I did.

The artwork is done my an artist from Toronto – Andy Belanger – he has a gritty “low budget horror movie” feel to his art, almost something out of one of Sam Rami’s old flicks.  (I love Sam Rami/ Bruce Campbel flicks)

The story takes off right after Hamlet (yep dust off your copy of Coles Notes) kills Polonius and his mother disowns him.  Eventually through the story Hamlet meets Richard the Third and his three witches – they set him on a mission – to kill Shakespeare.

The back of the book calls this a mashing of Fables meets League of Extraordinary Gentlemen – I have to agree, I really enjoyed this comic and I am eagerly awaiting getting the next issue.

Well there you go, more new comics out on May 12, I’ll pick up and few and let you all know what I think.
