The band released five albums over nine years, including their 1994 breakthrough Superunknown, which featured “Spoonman” and “Black Hole Sun.” After releasing Down on the Upside in 1996, the group shared a bill with Metallica on the Lollapalooza tour before disbanding. Though Cornell enjoyed significant success in his other musical endeavor, Audioslave, and released three solo albums, fans of the rock star are undoubtedly thrilled to see him return to his origins. Of course, Thayil, Cameron and Shepherd kept busy this past decade-plus, too; Thayil and Shepherd collaborated with countless other musicians, and Cameron stepped in to drum for Pearl Jam.
Together again, Soundgarden can celebrate a legacy Hit Parader writer Henry Wilson described as “a brilliant display of technical proficiency tempered by heart-felt emotion.” A headlining spot at Lollapalooza is completely fitting, as it will allow the group to pick up where they left off—only now, the band brings years of outside influences that will likely give their classic tunes a fresh perspective.
