If you’re like me, you think MTV is the worst thing to happen to music since…I can’t think of an analogy right now. Once a bastion of rebellion, MTV has gone from the network that brought us great programs like Headbangers Ball and played music to bringing heaping mounds of homunculus turds like My Super Sweet Sixteen to living rooms in America and the world. And I can pin point where this changed happened, the day when Beavis and Butthead left the air.
No show pissed off parents, teachers, feminists, the elderly, the government, and Kip Winger like Beavis and Butthead. Taking societal problems like juvenile delinquency, pyromania, sexism, and downright rudeness and making them funny, the terrible duo brought political incorrectness to new levels with no hint of redeeming social values. And you laughed your ass off. But there was something else Beavis and Butthead did that was valuable to society, they filtered out crappy music.
The highlight of every episode of Beavis and Butthead was when the two would critique music videos. Beavis and Butthead made and broke bands. It was through the show that I discovered such acts as Pantera, White Zombie, Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, and Danzig. All of these bands were praised by the duo while hair bands, new wave, techno, and anything by Kip Winger suffered their wrath. Kip Winger apparently sued creator Mike Judge for defamation, claiming the show killed his career because the two of them bashed him so badly. (He would later try to pitch ideas to Judge for the show) That alone is reason for MTV to get Mike Judge to revive Beavis and Butthead.
Can you imagine what Beavis and Butthead would do to acts like the Jonas Brothers? Emo will be dead and buried by the time the boys get through it. Hell, I say MTV should do specials where the boys watch some of their shows and do commentary for a half-hour. But, not everything need be negative; several modern metal acts like All That Remains or ASKA could use Beavis and Butthead to reach a new audience. The possibilities are endless and all Mike would have to do is re-use some old footage of them on the couch. The time has come for a new generation to be corrupted by Beavis and Butthead, so MTV get Mike Judge on the phone now! A revival can’t be any worse what’s currently aired.
