In a perfect world, Ulcerate is the biggest death metal band on the planet. I can’t fathom why more people haven’t been turned onto this band, but their track record of break-neck speed, cacophonic death metal is one of a kind. Darker than Gorguts yet not as much of an oddity as Imperial Triumphant, the New Zealand trio have long found their own brand of death metal, and on album number six, Stare into Death and Be Still, the band is perfecting their concrete and foolproof formula. In case you haven’t guessed it yet, this is one of the best death metal releases of the year, if not in music as a whole. And it’s only April.
Ever since the band’s founding in late 2004, AHAB have been exploring the deep dark sea, while becoming the true masters of solemn melancholy. The nautic doom heavyweights now announce their first intense live album, Live Prey – recorded at Death Row Fest 2017 in Jena, Germany – to be released on June 26, 2020 via Napalm Records.
Ashes to Omens have played their hand once again and are bringing a hauntingly, melodically/metal blend of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall” to life. The song honors the original integrity of the wall, yet each brick laid by Ashes to Omens builds itself into a harder edge of interpretation that undeniably hits the backbone of rock fans and runs shivers down the spine of hard rockaholics.
Take Cover is a collection of the Orange County band’s hard to find cover songs recorded over the years that have never been available in a single collection. “Becoming” (Pantera), “Propaganda” (Sepultura), “London Dungeon” (Misfits), “Planets Collide” (Crowbar), and “Baby Got Back” (Sir Mix-A-Lot) are featured on this 5-song EP, which arrives on digital and streaming platforms on Friday.
