» Blog Archive Dark Horse in the Headlines 11/8/10 -

It’s another manic Monday, and while you may wish it was Sunday (’cause that’s your fun day), hopefully reading “Dark Horse in the Headlines” can help you through the rough waters of early-in-the-week blues! I’m Publicity Coordinator Jim Gibbons and these are the DH headlines!

Amazon’s Best of 2010
Last week, Amazon released their prestigious year end “Best of” lists. Dark Horse had three books featured in the “Top 10 Books: Comics & Graphic Novels” section of the Best Books of 2010 list. Under the well-respected “Editor’s Picks” section, Mike Mignola and Duncan Fegredo’s Hellboy Volume 9: The Wild Hunt was featured, and both Troublemaker Book 1 and Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season Eight Volume 6: Retreat were listed in the “Customer Favorites” section. Congrats to the creative teams on the books selected to these distinguished lists!

Creepy and Eerie
In honor of Halloween, USA Today ran a great feature on both Creepy and Eerie.

“For the monster, ghoul, slash and scream fans that are out there—those who remember the original runs of these magazines and those who are being newly introduced to the material—Creepy and Eerie are two classic fiction brands that have been sorely missed, and are now welcome returns, to today’s horror genre.”

Falling Skies
The upcoming Steven Spielberg-produced, Mark Verheiden-helmed “Falling Skies” is set for premiere on TNT next summer, but you can start whetting your appetite right now. Comics Alliance premiered the first two pages of the webcomic from Dark Horse that will air every other week on DarkHorse.com and TNT’s Web site leading up to the premiere of the show. Written by Paul Tobin with art by Juan Ferrayra, you can catch a great behind-the-scenes video of how the comic was put together and how it intros the show over at Comics Alliance, as well!

Dollhouse
“Dollhouse” television writers Maurissa Tanchareon and Jed Whedon, who will also be writing the upcoming comics continuation of the series, spoke with Newsarama about where Maggie, Zone and Griff go from here (“here” being the end of the television series, of course!). The comic’s a ways off, but you can get a first taste of what’s in store with this interview.

Sin City
Over at Comics Alliance, David Brothers wrote a thoughtful piece about interesting and unorthodox cover design. The new printings of Frank Miller’s Sin City were among the volumes he pointed out as good examples of something that stands out.

“Viewed in print and in their proper context, though, these covers are striking. There is no logo, no issue number and no title on the cover, just a splash of Miller’s art on a perfectly white canvas. The name and volume number have been left on the spine, of course, but the plain cover is stark and captivating. The lack of trade dress actually works in the favor of these covers, as they are forced to live and die by their art alone.”

Conan
Getting in the 100% Man spirit, Comics Alliance ran a massive gallery of upcoming Conan images. Including gorgeous Tomás Giorello sketches, Doug Wheatley covers and black and white Mike Hawthorne pages, this look at all the upcoming adventures facing the Cimmerian combine to form the most incredible and über-manly preview gallery of all-time! Give it a look and get pumped up beyond belief!

Movember
Seven Dark Horse Comics employees are growing mustaches all month as part of the worldwide fund-raising event Movember. Much like the pink ribbon of Breast Cancer awareness, gents can change the face of men’s health by growing a mustache and literally changing their face. All funds raised in the US go to aid the LIVESTRONG and Prostate Cancer Foundations. In short, it’s a good cause—a good cause that comics journalists have been kind enough to write about!

ComicBookresources.com’s Robot 6 wrote an article last week about Movember, pointing people to Movember’s Comics Network and the donation page for the head of the Dark Horse-heavy Team Mammoth-Stache’s captain (this handsome dude named Jim Gibbons… seems like a rad guy). Comics Alliance also mentioned the fund-raising effort and ComicAttack.net wrote a fantastic piece about the event, as well!

Many, many thanks to those three sites for helping spread the word about a worthy charity in which some of us at Dark Horse are participating.

Previews
Plenty of Dark Horse previews hit the interwebs last week, here’s a sampling…

  • Keepin’ it manly, ComicBookResources.com premiered the first preview of David Lapham and Gabriel Guzman’s Kull: The Hate Witch #1. 100% awesome, right?!
  • The Beat ran a tremendous preview of Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo #133.
  • Newsarama showcased pages of the final chapter of Zack Whedon and Andy MacDonald’s Terminator: 1984.
  • iFanboy previewed Eric Powell and Kyle Hotz’s Billy The Kid’s Old Timey Oddities and The Ghastly Fiend of London #3.
  • Bloody Disgusting posted some pages of Richard Corben’s fabulous artwork from Hellboy: Double Feature of Evil.

Reviews

  • Newsarama raved about Baltimore: The Plague Ships #4…

“Dark Horse vowed that they would do vampires right, and Baltimore: The Plague Ships is proof positive that they’ve lived up to their word.”

In fact, they liked the book so much, they raved about it twice!

  • Comics Bulletin thrilled at issue #38 of Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 8. (Speaking of Buffy, io9.com premiered the spoileriffic cover to issue #39. Head here if you want to see it… but read issue #38 first!)
  • Forbidden Planet UK enjoyed Jill Thompson’s Scary Godmother.
  • And, Time Out Chicago had great things to say about Beasts of Burden

“A sleeper hit from Dark Horse that’s gaining more fans every year, Beasts is the brainchild of writer Evan Dorkin and artist Jill Thompson. A trippy Lassie/Twin Peaks mashup, Dorkin’s dark tales make excellent use of Thompson’s mad painting skills, depicting a world where the animals (who can talk to each other, but not to their humans) must sneak out of their homes to ward off the evil perpetually gnawing at the edges of this seemingly idyllic town.”
