Not wasting any time, Lucasfilm has confirmed that JJ Abrams will be returning to a galaxy far, far away to direct and write the untitled Episode IX of the Sequel Trilogy.

Abrams had previously directed The Force Awakens, and after Colin Trevorrow had left the project last week. Rian Johnson, director of The Last Jedi had previously denied directing Episode IX, leaving Abrams being the leading contender to return to Star Wars. Abrams had said earlier in 2016, after the release of The Force Awakens that he was jealous of Johnson for directing the next film. It only seems logical that he return to direct this one out of pure passion for the franchise.

Episode IX is scheduled to be released in May of 2019.
