Norwegian progressive black metal outfit Borknagar release their 8th studio album with impressive results. Having been in existence since the mid-1990’s, Borknagar has been a force in the progressive arena and their newest release, “Universal”, holds true to form. From the opening moments of the appropriately titled “Havoc” which leads off the album, the track which builds with an intensity that kicks into a fervor before you have a chance to settle into the strumming of the guitar and the pounding drums. Before you know it, you’ve already been thoroughly bombarded with snarling verses and operatic choruses.
Borknagar shows off their various abilities throughout the album, with the aforementioned changes in vocal style to guitar solos, and intros, exquisite drum work and expansive use of keyboards, organ, piano and synthesizer. Some noted moments are the piano outro on “The Stir Of Seasons,” the spacey interludes on “For A Thousand Years To Come,” and the epic 7+ minute “Abrasion Tide” which really delves into all of their different styles.
If there were to be an obvious pick for a single, it would be “Fleshflower.” This is one catchy tune and rocks the whole way through. It doesn’t get too far out there as some prog metal can and gives a full representation of what the band can do. It also largely relies on the use of clean vocals over the black metal snarl.
My personal favorite on the album is “Worldwide.” It builds up nicely and showcases some intense moments which blend seamlessly with the organ led bridges.
The closer, “My Domain,” lets you off this prog ride gently but reminds you of the journey you just came from.
“Universal” will surely delight progressive black metal fans and Borknagar’s devout followers as it really showcases what they’re all about.
