There has been a lot of talk about The Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver controversy amongst fans recently. Last month it was revealed that Bryan Singer and Joss Wheadon will both be featuring the brother/ sister duo in Days of Future Past as well as Avengers 2. Both 20th Century Fox and Marvel own and are allowed to feature the characters in their films, however will working against each other with separate concepts be destructive to both creative ideas?Wheadon finally spoke on the subject recently with an interview with Crave Online. When speaking about Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver he said, “[They’re] a huge part of [Marvel’s The Avengers 2], I’m really excited about it. I don’t know what they’re [Fox] doing and I’m determinably not knowing. They’ll do their thing. I have to do mine.” Wheadon also mentioned his astronomical success with Avengers and how Fox never really noticed his talent and let a lot of things slip through their fingers, including the failed Wonder Woman television series. “It’s like grief,” he said. “There’s a period of anger where you’re like, ‘Hey! Remember all those times where I told you it would have worked? They believed me and it did! So now I’m going to get angry about stuff that I had pretty much dealt with.’ You do kind of want to have a slap-line of everybody you had previously worked for. But I’m luckier than most people, so you get over that.”
I think this might be a catastrophe waiting to happen. Considering that Scarlet Witch is a mutant she has every right to be featured in Days of Future Past. If both directors decide to go forth and feature these characters in their films and create clashing story lines it could also infuriate fans. It’s now no longer about character development with the duo, it’s about which one is going to look better and be more awesome on screen. This element makes me feel like there is going to be a lot lost on their back story and personalities due to a race to be the best factor. We’ll see what happens, however, I have a looming sense of train wreck waiting to happen and I’m a little bit scared.
