That run of Transformers was one of the best. Marvel was really good at doing alot of these licensing books(ie: ROM, Micronauts, G.I. Joe)

I was at a Transformer convention in 2006 where the editor of Transformers #3 (Bob Budiansky) told the story of how Spider-Man ended up in this book. He said Jim Salicrup who was writing the issue was also editor of Spider-Man at the time and it was his idea to do the guest appearance. Budiansky agreed but when they proposed the idea to Hasbro it was initially turned down. At the time Spider-Man was being done in action figure form by Mattel in the Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars limited series and Hasbro didn't want to advertise the competition's toys in their comic. Budiansky was stunned by this and his recalled his response was (in his own words) "Hey you're lucky we're showing Spider-Man in this Transformers book. Nobody knows who the Transformers are!" So they came up with a compromise wherein Spider-Man would appear in the black costume instead of the red and blue one being licensed to Mattel. And here we are 25 years later.

The book got up to a third printing and there were a couple compilations done that included it while Marvel still had the license. Marvel did a magazine sized reprint of issues 1-3 called "Transformers Collected Comics" and they also did a small digest sized collection called "Transformers Comics Magazine" that reprinted it in issue #2. But like I say those came out in the 80s around the time of the movie. The Titan trade does have it but a more recent IDW trade called "Classic Transformers Volume 1" wasn't allowed to use the Spider-Man appearance (or Circuit Breaker from issue 9) so they had to work around it. So while there are options, you're right in that they're tough to track down and people really have to know what they're looking for.
