Having been stuck in movie limbo for years now, the Channing Tatum-attmade aached Gambit film has found yet another director attached to it in Gore Verbinski. The director, known for his work on the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies, will be the newest addition to the production team, which has been interchanging members since the project was announced in 2014.

Verbinski has a mixed filmography to back him up. While I jumped ship from the Pirates franchise after the first film, I love what Verbinski has done with The Ring and hold it in high regards. Even this year’s A Cure For Wellness, while not entirely perfect, I found to be a disturbing, cold, and engaging movie that didn’t warrant the negative response it received. That said, while I consider myself a fan of his work, I’m not sure if Verbinski will be the right choice for Gambit, let alone if the character can hold a film on his own.

Gambit was last seen in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, portrayed by Taylor Kitsch. Tatum will take up the name, and while he’s able to do action films, is he really right for Gambit? We’ll have to see, as this project seems to refuse to die.
