Sadly, while we’ll never see Guillermo del Toro’s proposed final Hellboy film, that doesn’t mean Hellboy is an untouchable property.
Breaking a long-awaited silence about a Hellboy movie, creator Mike Mignola revealed that a reboot was on the way and that it would be rated R. The film would be directed by Neil Marshall and that the titular role would be played by David Harbour of Stranger Things fame. Not only that, but the film will be making use of more horror elements, all in an attempt to distance itself from other comic book properties.
Revealed to be under the working title of “Rise of the Blood Queen,” director Neil Marshall discusses it further:
“I can’t really talk about specifics with regard to the story, which they’re keeping a pretty tight lid on at the moment, but I can say that this is a darker, more gruesome version of Hellboy. Neil said from the very beginning that he wanted to walk a razor’s edge between horror and comic book movie, which was music to my ears, because that’s what I was shooting for in the script, and precisely what Mignola does so well with the comics.”
