upon-a-burning-bodyHot off the new releases press, Upon A Burning Body, out of San Antonio, TX, drop a hell of a load in their new album, Straight From The Barrio.

A southern tinged call back to their roots, It’s steeped in their hispanic style of Metal/Deathcore, and sprints like it’s life depends on it. Heavy, crunchy, and mixed with some spanish classical hints, Straight From The Barrio has some decent highs flowing out of it. However, the album doesn’t stray far from what we’ve heard for the last 5-7 years, and honestly can’t really get me going all that hard. The -Core cliches (down tuned to hell guitars, electronic bass drops, the vocals that sounds like they are whisky burned/clean singing) are prevalent, and will give you the opposite of surprises, so none. It’s a middle of the road, lost in the crowd release that is disappointing, since Red. White. Green. was probably one of their best and most creative releases. They have simply either slipped back down the slope to sit in the overcrowded Tough Guy metal, or not moved at all. Either is not a good development at all for this band.

As for the highlights, tracks B.M.F., Fake Plastic Smile, and Walk Alone Again are going to be my cherry picks. They don’t bring anything I haven’t been force fed by the majority of popular metal for years, but they at least get my blood going at least into a simmer. They have some very good guitar work bolstered by their current drummer, Tito Felix, and are aggressive enough to stand out from the rest of the meh.

If you are a genre veteran of this style, you’ll most likely dig this bland release, or if you want some cheap tracks for the gym, but anyone looking to add a bright, repeatable listening experience or something new and heavy will want to pan this one. If this is what the Barrio has to offer, maybe it should have stayed there; cherry pick on this one.
