death-fortressNot to be confused with the German black metal band Dark Fortress, New Jersey’s Death Fortress are something of a wonder in the 21st century. No Facebook page, no Twitter, but just a Bandcamp page with both their albums, and a tie to Fallen Empire Records adds an air of mystery to this band. You, quite honestly, can’t even find a picture of the band at all.

Deathless March of the Unyielding should no doubt catch the eye of any black metal fan: it’s necro-blue album cover is reminiscent of Emperor’s In the Nightside Eclipse and Dissection’s The Somberlain and Storm of the Light’s Bane. It goes without saying that fans of either of those bands should feel at home with Death Fortress, but the overall quality of their songwriting is what sets this band apart from a genre filled with so many similar bands.

The album opens up ferociously, and it’s by the time you reach the second track of the album, “The Erasure of Species” that you realize the album isn’t being forced at all. Each riff and passage smoothly and melodically transition into one another, forging forward with ferocity and in a maelstrom of chaos. With how organic the entire album is, Death Fortress aren’t trying here at all: they just write great black metal. Even by the end, Death Fortress are jumping from track to track but making each and every one distinct from one another. When one’s first reaction upon completing an album is to go back and listen to it again, you know there is something right about it.

You can stream and download the band’s newest album, as well as their first release Among the Ranks of the Unconquerable, over on their Bandcamp page. Or, if you wish, you can make donation to them at the checkout. It’s only April, but Deathless March of the Unyielding is already a strong contender for this year’s Best Of list.
