I know it’s hard to believe, but sometimes there are just too many comics. We set our pull lists, we got our weekly buys on lock and that’s seemingly that. But every once and a while, it helps to maybe hold up on that four thousandth Batman issue for a week or two and try something new! In an industry as large and varied as this, it’s always good to stretch your horizons and grab a single of something you think looks cool! Today I’m gonna highlight a few books that I personally recommend, and I’d love to hear some recommendations in the comments! With that in mind, here are my picks

1) Brian Azzarello’s Wonder WomanWonder_Woman_Vol_4-35_Cover-1_Teaser

Set to end his run on this book next month, Brian Azzarello’s run on the New 52’s Wonder Woman is destined for greatness. Easily one of the best Wonder Woman stories we’ve gotten in a while, and nowhere near enough people are giving it the time of day. Now, normally WW books don’t get talked about because they tend to be less than amazing; but that’s absolutely not the case here. Pick up the first trade (which is under 10 dollars on more than one online retailer) and see for yourself. October sees the end of this run, so now’s the time to catch up. Trust me on this one, this is easily one of the best books DC has going right now.

2) Joe Casey’s SEX

That’s right, it’s Image’s Not-Sex Criminals book; Sex. Title difficulties aside, I can recommend Sex with the utmost certainty. Sex is a remarkably smart book, the title-theme weaving its way through every facet of the book in both remarkably subtle and absolutely bombastic ways. Now, I normally hate comparisons between indie/non Big Two titles and the aforementioned Big Two, but it’s impossible to not compare Sex to some of the better Batman writing out there. In short, Sex is one of the very few Cape books on the stands I can say is worth every penny; and with Image’s 1st trades being 10 dollars business model it’s more than worth the investment.

3) Naoki Urasawa’s Monster

If you like manga at all and aren’t familiar with Naoki Urasawa; you have some reading to do! Luckily, one of his best series is getting the deluxe reprint treatment; and the second volume comes out next month. Collecting 2 volumes per Omnibus (clocking in at 9 omnibuses by series’ end) in a larger print-size with a new translation; this reprint truly deserves its standing as “the Perfect Edition”. Monster is a psychological thriller about a serial killer; but like all Urasawa manga it’s much more than that. Delving into morality and the human condition, it’ll definitely give even the most philosophical comics fan a workout. Check it out!

4) Felipe Smith’s Ghost Rider

Ghost Rider is one of my favorite comics characters so I will admit this recommendation may seem a little biased; but I wouldn’t steer you wrong. Felipe Smith’s re-imagining of the spirit of vengeance is a wild ride and a treasure for fans of Marvel. While still kicking into high gear, this comic shows a ton of promise. Transplanting the spirit of vengeance into L.A, and replacing his bike with a muscle car, may seem like a major breach of tradition. But it’s precisely this cavalier spirit that really makes this book stand out. The first five issue arc wrapped in July, with another arc soldiering on with a new issue on Wednesday. If you like a dose of outsider anti-hero in your weekly reads, and don’t mind some genuinely well written family drama alongside your flaming-headed badassery; pick this bad boy up!

So that’s a smattering of books that need some love; and feel free to sound off in the comments if you have any books you want me to give a shot!
