The news came as a blow to all fans of the Elder Scrolls series. Not only would they have to pay for the online subscription for The Elder Scrolls Online, they would also have to purchase and Xbox Gold member account. Fan’s of online gaming have long endured the suffrage of subscription hounding games with inflation of price, additional charges, and renewals annually, however, being slapped with a double charge so Microsoft can benefit from an already sound investment sounds like a little bit too much, and Bethesda is fighting back. IGN spoke with The Official Xbox Magazine during Gamescom, Bethesda PR and marketing boss Pete Hines said of the Xbox Live Gold requirement, “[W]e have been in talks with Microsoft about that very thing, and seeing whether or not there’s any room to change their minds about that, for folks who are only playing The Elder Scrolls Online and don’t want to pay for an Xbox Live Gold subscription, just to pay for the Elder Scrolls Online.” It’s looking like Microsoft is pretty grounded in their decision, “The answer right now is that’s the way it works, but it’s something that we’re aware of and we keep pushing on, to see if there’s something that can be done,” Hines said. The new games subscription will cost $15 a month to play online. The game comes with a free month of gameplay, a trial run if you will. After the month, players must pay to play. This fee exists on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. However the PC version will not require users to pay any additional fees. So the question is, will this effect the consumers so much that it sways them from purchasing the game for next generation consoles? Microsoft is still in a whirlwind of shit after the fiasco that happened at E3, and their fan base is far less than thrilled with them. Perhaps this small sacrifice will ensure consumer morale and help clear their name a little bit. Food for thought for you, friends.
