The Big Kahuna Hard Music

Over the past three years, Tech-9 Music has staged well over a hundred shows under the branded monikers Gotham Rocks and No Mercy Metal. On Thursday, July 21, the company will celebrate its third anniversary with a gala event at Irving Plaza featuring seven bands from the New York area. The complete line-up features The August Infinity, Killcode, Charetta, Bound By Substance, Sweet Fix, Woods of Arden and Crush of Empires. The August Infinity and Charetta, alongside Sweet Fix, will be releasing CDs that week.

Tech-9 Music founders Cary Tamura and Mike Sankari are producing 50 shows a year in the New York City, New Jersey and Long Island areas, working with well over a hundred bands. Their efforts in filling the void of a rock/metal scene for the region has successfully delivered event destinations for tens of thousands of music fans. With each passing year, the numbers continue to grow exponentially.

The praise is echoed throughout the industry and amongst bands that have benefitted from the diligence and energy these two impresarios have brought to New York Music. Fuse-TV Uranium host Juliya Chernetsky shares, “For three years now, Gotham Rocks has redefined the NYC local music scene and I’m sure will continue to keep Gotham rocking, while No Mercy Metal has proven to be a force to reckon with.” Sirius / XM Octane Radio DJ Kayla Riley adds, “Gotham Rocks has been an amazing outlet for new and upcoming bands. Being a radio host, I’m always looking for that unique sound & bands nowadays need a platform for their name to grow. Gotham Rocks events have helped to facilitate all that in supporting the scene. Hey, ya never know, you just might find the next big act right here.”

On the artist side, The August Infinity singer Joshua Hawksley states, “Gotham Rocks has fostered the band since our inception. Before we were even a complete group, they believed in us and gave us a shot. Since then they have put us on increasingly amazing stages in front of ever growing and supportive audiences. That’s what this community is all about (and I don’t use the word community lightly). These guys find the best in local and regional rock talent and through togetherness and brotherhood, they make us all shine.” Killcode singer Tom Morrissey adds, “The Gotham Rocks approach is different and cool because they are from the same streets we are. They aren’t some corporate machine. They are a bunch of guys/gals who started a grass roots project three years ago to get great music heard at great venues. They are pulling it off, and we are glad to be a part of it.” Lastly, Charetta singer Angelina Delcarmen sums it in sharing, “Gotham Rocks resurrected the NYC rock scene. Their shows are now where the scene lives and breathes.”

Looking towards the company milestone, Co-founder Cary reflects, “We are really excited about this show. There are a lot of very talented, kick-ass, hard rock bands in New York and this is going to be a great chance to see seven of them on one stage. I know that there are a lot of fans in New York of bands like The Used, Black Label Society, Evanescence, Chevelle and many other touring modern rock bands. If you like bands like that, there is a Gotham Rocks band on this bill for you.”

Three years ago, Cary Tamura and Mike Sankari, addressed the growing need for a new vision promoter in the NY scene, who would take the initiative to create an environment solely based on the agenda of nurturing rising talent. With little more than sweat, energy, and a belief that a frayed scene could be re-energized, the duo set out to forge a stage for bigger and better shows for deserving, hardworking and talented bands in and around New York. The initial vision to create a showcase environment exposing bands to music industry, media, new fans and other great acts in the region has delivered a new scene for New York City. A community counting tens of thousands has emerged, and with each passing month, continues to grow.

Gotham Rocks has become a metal and modern rock powerhouse, staging over 50 shows a year at prestigious venues such as Gramercy Theater, Highline Ballroom, Irving Plaza, Six Flags Great Adventure (Jackson, NJ) and many others. The company continues to explore viable avenues to create opportunities for talent outside of the five boroughs, with footholds in Long Island, New Jersey via their alliance with Great Adventure, and other regions currently being explored. Outside of talent based in the New York area, bands from California, Kentucky, Florida, Japan and others are amongst the hundreds who have enjoyed the benefits of this independent concert series. Sankari elaborates, “What makes our concert series special is that we actively work to create opportunities for bands beyond the shows themselves. We grow a real sense of community because everyone we work with on a regular basis – the bands, venues, fans and sponsors – recognize that by working together we make great things happen for everyone who gets involved.”

As an incubator for talent, the undertaking has a significant altruistic side. Thousands of dollars has been raised alongside significant awareness for local non-profits like The Door, Tuesday’s Children and Lifebeat. Both Gotham Rocks and No Mercy Metal share a mission statement to promote environmental responsibility working with Green Mountain Energy – a renewable energy utilities option for residents in NYC. Endorsements and sponsor support has been received from instrument, clothing and drink companies, some of which include Budweiser, DR Strings, Korg, Krank Amplification, Marshall Amplification, San Miguel Beer, Spector Guitars and Basses, and others.
