A fantastic page of panels!

Although this review is based on a single comic, drawn by Tim Sale about Batman, the reason I am his fan is due to the way he drew Daredevil.

It’s no secret to any of my readers that I have always burned a torch for Matt Murdock… and maybe, just maybe, Tim Sale has something to do with that.

“Tales of the Batman” sort of fell into my lap. It’s a collection of 5 stories, by various writers, but all of the pencilling is Sale’s. It runs the gamut from traditional art, found in “The Misfits” with Alan Grant, and a more modern style, like that found in “Blades” with author James Robinson. I mention these in passing, because I am focusing this entry on “Date Knight”, written by Darwyn Cooke.

“Why ‘Date Knight’?”, you ask. Well, I have always loved the literal “cat and flying mouse” relationship between Catwoman and Batman. No matter who writes or draws her, she is the perfect mix of sexiness and whimsicality. While always going out for her own self interests (which at times, include the coincidental good fortune for others), Ms. Selina Kyle isn’t afraid to curl up to the most feared mask in Gotham; purring in his face, while (literally) whipping him. Perhaps we all have love for Batman because he truly does have THE BEST Rogue’s Gallery of anyone…

The reason that this is one of my all time favorite Batman comics is it’s because it’s a 13 page break from the darkness of Gotham. Comic relief is usually provided by the Joker, but not in this instance. Normally, I am totally against revealing plots…but…whatever. This time, I’m breaking my own rule.

The insanely small synopsis: Catwoman lures Batman into the Egyptian Museum…Danger, right? Wrong! She forces him to go on a date with her. This isn’t a love-fest, but with these two, it never is. There is crashing into a rose stand and restaurant, a Catwoman proclaiming that she only “wants to play” and our caped crusader eventually gets tied up and smothered with kisses. He never really puts up much of a protest, because after all…there’s something there, right?

Tim Sale’s illustrations aren’t the most epic thing in the world here. However, they are 13 pages of the most outstanding Batman and Catwoman images because the truth of their relationship is revealed in these panels. However messed up it is, and isn’t love always messed up, there is a passion that burns for one another. If you look into the eyes, and the way the body language is shown.. Batman is slightly annoyed that he isn’t out beating the shit out of some thug, but really glad that he’s been “captured” by someone whom he doesn’t know how to be with, but can’t really imagine being without. This is all relayed through body language, because the most fun part about this comic, is that Batman doesn’t say anything. Not one word against this. He knew it was a trap, and that was all he had to comment. He has plenty if chances to escape, or fight…but he chooses to be with her, with this nemesis of love.
