The Big Kahuna Comic Book News, Movies, News

So let me start off with saying that when I heard that “The Batman” animated series was being cancelled and replaced by the new Batman: The Brave and The Bold series, I was a bit upset. I, unlike many animated Bat-fans liked “The Batman” series, especially in its final season as members of the JLA were making individual appearances. So, I resisted a bit on catching up with The Brave and The Bold. Then I watched a couple of episodes on the Cartoon Network, and lo and behold, I was hooked. When I received the DVD collection “Season 1 part 1” in the mail, I immediately made time in the form of several hours to view the entire set in one sitting. With each and every episode, the stories just got better and better. The one thing that separates this animated series from the others is its use of a 5 minute mini story at the beginning of each episode that has nothing to do with the actual cartoon episode.
For example, there would be a short introduction storyline with B’Wana Beast and then the main episode would feature Wildcat and the Outsiders. The series really kept to the heart of “The Brave and The Bold” comic book, which pits team ups with the Dark Knight and heroes from all over the DC Universe. The series teamed Bats with several obscure characters as well as some of DC’s top players…although not the one’s you would think. Green Arrow, Red Tornado, Aquaman, The Atom, Wild Cat, and Plastic Man are some of the more popular characters, while The New Blue Beetle, Deadman, Elongated Man, Bronze Tiger and The Outsiders round up the more interesting and lesser know characters from the DC funhouse. The series has a retro feel, like the Green Arrow character harkening back to the one from the JSA days and the theme music reminding you of the classic 60’s Batman serial.

One episode in this DVD package stands out more than the others. The New Blue Beetle plays a more prominent part in this series as he is partnered with Bats in about 3 of this seasons first half episodes. One of those episodes goes on to explain the Origin of the “Ted Chord’ Blue Beetle. Now this story doesn’t show the Maxwell Lord version of the Beetles death, (which was chronicled in the Countdown To Infinite Crisis comic) but the series creators do handle a very honorable demise to that character. All in all, great show.
Extras are a little light, the only stand out, if that’s what you want to call it…is a promotion for Lego Harry Potter the video game.
This DVD set houses the first 13 episodes of the first season. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up, it won’t dissapoint. Can’t wait for Season 1 Part 2!
