» Blog Archive Review: Immolation at The Studio at Webster Hall -

The Yonkers, NY death metal veterans gave their fans a chance to get up close and personal with the band with a show at the intimate Studio at Webster Hall on July 28th. Call it a preview for their upcoming “Feel the Stench of Death” tour this October, but this performance delivered from start to finish.
I got to The Studio a little after doors opened at 8 and found Ross and Rob hanging out by their merch stand. I spent some time talking to them about “Majesty and Decay” – ok it was mostly me being a fan boy – the set for the night, whether the show was being recorded, and got a picture with them (posted below). They and I both lamented that they weren’t going on stage until close to 11 PM, but on-stage time ultimately didn’t matter, they could have come on at 1 AM and I would have waited it out.
So allow me to go on tangent to detail a little about The Studio for those of you not familiar with it so you all have an idea of how tiny the venue is. When I said intimate I meant small, like less than 500 people small. The stage is only about 2-3 feet high and there is no security barrier or security personnel to separate you from the band. Needless to say, I went and got myself a spot right in front of Ross’ mike at the dead center of the stage.
Finally Immolation came on and kicked off the night with “The Purge.” If possible, they played it even faster than on “Majesty” and got things rocking. The set mixed everything from classic tracks from “Dawn of Possession” and of course, a large sampling of new ones from “Majesty and Decay.” Many of the classics were dedicated to long time friends and fans of the band, and they even played some songs that haven’t been played live in many, many years to the audience’s delight. Everything sounded fresh and crisp, thanks in part to the acoustics of the venue and to Immolation’s superior skill. Ross was extremely grateful to the crowd, especially for trekking out on a Wednesday and having to go to work in the morning… except him, he took Thursday off. Their set wrapped up about 12:15AM and I walked out with Ross’ setlist, a sore neck and deaf ears. If you aren’t considering catching them on tour this October, you should seriously reconsider.
