fairservice Comic Book News, News

Well day two of the ComiCon was even better than the first day.

I was able to connect with many more artists than yesterday, I think with the lack of people attending the show, the artists were still sleeping at their tables for the most part :)  Today all the artists seemed more lively, the people were just streaming into the show.

**Grail Quest Update –
After going through and asking AGAIN if any of the vendors had a reasonably priced issue of New Mutants #98, DRAGON LADY COMICS was the only vendor able to assure me that they had a copy withinn my price range at thier store in the warehouse area.  All the other vendors prices ranged from $50.00 to as high as $150.00!!! This book still guides at only $5.00, according to last years Overstreet.  I guess that once vendors get wind that there is a high budget movie comming they feel it is time to jack the prices from 10 – 30 times guide.

Well enough of my ranting … maybe i’ll do an article on the overpricing of comics in the future… back to the ComiCon ***

The first person in “artist alley” I talked to was Jeff Lemire, who both writes and Illustrates the Sweet Tooth comic from DC’s Vertigo Line.  I was able to get the first trade in the series that included issues 1 – 5 as well as copies of issues 6 – 10 from him.  He was also nice enough to throw a sketch inside the trade along with his autograph, and he signed the comics as well.

When I told him I was covering the show for Metal Machine he promptly offered me an interview, I grabbed his email adress from him and I will be setting up a date for the interview in the very near future.

**I read.. no devoured the Sweet Tooth issues in about an hour.. it is an amazing story.  I will be getting Paradise Comics to add this title to my file.  I am eagerly awaiting getting issue #11. **

Next it was over to the Sal Abbinanti floor show.  This guy was HILLARIOUS!!  I started watching him draw a sketch from hit Atomika series for a fan and he looks over at Ernie Chan and starts cutting into him.. Chan was in stitches along with the rest of us.

From Sal I picked up his Atomika series, I haven’t given it a read yet but it is on my short list.  The artwork is great and I hear the story is too.

Beside Sal was the amazingly tallented Dale Keown, his line up of fans was sooo long all I could do was sneak in beside them and take a peak at his sketch book and pages for sale.  I would LOVE to get a hold of some of that art work for my home and office.

My next article I will include my time with some of the new artists, my time with Marvin Law was great, talk about a floor show.

All in all this show was great, it gave fans an intimate chance to get to meet their favorite artists, as well as introducing people to those trying to break into the business.

In my third article covering the show I will be posting the photo’s I was able to take, scans of some of the art work I managed to get.
