Deuce Hard Music, News

If you thought Helloween’s “Unarmed” album was going to be just another best of collection, think again because they have a few tricks up their sleeves and they’re a real treat. The band took 10 of their best tracks and re-recorded them in totally new fashion. Incorporating classical orchestra, saxophone, accordion, various percussion, and piano the current members refreshed their classics with surprising results. Any metal fan can tell you that when a band goes back and re-records their classic hits, the results are either uninspired or bland, merely benefitting from the marvels of modern production. “Unarmed” breathes new life into these songs and can give long time fans a new appreciation for the classics and an appreciation for new styles of music.
The opener, “Dr. Stein” incorporates a Jazzy saxophone filling in on noticeable guitar parts, most noticeably the solo. The song is fun and catchy and is a great way to display the style on this album.
“The Keeper’s Trilogy,” which combines “Halloween,” “Keeper Of The Seven Keys,” and “The King for A 1000 Years” into a 17 minute medley, features the 70-piece Prague Symphony Orchestra and is the stand out track on the album. Andi’s vocals are clear and crisp and mesh wonderfully with the orchestra’s talents.
“Perfect Gentleman” has a strolling in the park feel which is uplifting and could give any listener a bounce in their step. If this one doesn’t make you whistle then nothing will.
Even if you’re not a long time fan of Helloween, or have never considered listening to them before, you should take the time to listen to “Unarmed.” The album is refreshing as far as best of compilations go and displays the bands ability to try something new and succeed.
