amazing captain nemoThe Amazing Captain Nemo

When I was first sent this movie, and I saw the age of it – 1970’s – I was not really looking forward to watching this movie.   It actually took me about a week to finally put it into my laptop to watch it,  I knew that if I  put a movie that old into my DVD player my wife would probably give me the “I  don’t think so” look.

Much to my surprise when I started the movie, I was hooked.  I didn’t take my eyes off the movie the whole time it was on, it wasn’t the special effects, or the acting, I didn’t recognize any of the cast.  It was just a really good no brainer movie.

It’s your typical 70’s villain asking for one million dollars, or he will vaporize Washington D.C. using his special death ray.  It is around this time that the navy are having a deep sea war games training session and two seals just happen to find the legendary Captain Nemo cryogenically frozen for one hundred years, and no surprise he wakes up just as they enter his chamber on the Nautallus.

He gets his submarine repaired by the navy; they ask him to help him with their little problem .  Along the way he manages to find the lost city of Atlantis, along with its people.  Nemo and the King of Atlantis manage to get captured, escape and , well, lets not give-away the ending.

This movie had me laughing out loud at times, the colored in laser fire, the fight scene with two old men sword fighting, the visible wires on the subs as they moved through the “water” among other things made this movie “campy” enough for me to enjoy it.  Also the lack of bad language and nudity make this one movie I could sit with my kids and enjoy without having to worry.

In its day this would have been a great movie.  Plenty of action and special effects for a 1978 film, so, if you like campy movies with low budget feel special effects, I actually, surprisingly, recommend this movie.
